#16 Social bookmarking
I have been using Del.icio.us since last year when Camilla Elliot spoke to our SLAV branch. It is a much better way of saving sites than my previous way of creating folders and storing them in each one. It is so much easier to tag all the sites and then just search for what you need. It is also useful when you have to change laptops and even worse if your hard drive crashes. I do save but it just takes more time than I have to load everything back up.
I decided to use Del.icio.us rather than Furl, which Camilla also mentioned. I just liked the “feel” of del.icio.us better. I have recently joined Diigo to see what everyone has been talking about but cannot compare the two yet.
I have also some made use of the social aspect of Del.icio.us and found some really good information on using blogs in classrooms, just to name one topic. I am now trying to use the information I have found to provide useful information to the teachers I work with.
I was also really interested to see one blog by Graham Wegner on educating parents as to how these new technologies are being used in schools by their children. This is something we are trying to incorporate into our school – a program of information, about the use of technology, for parents.
Thanks for sharing Graham’s link. I went to his Google Docs to have a look at his notes. Great example of the use of Google Docs there! He mentioned that blogging gives quieter kids a voice. I heartily agree with that. In class I would never have spoken up and just about died when asked for an opinion straight out, but would have been quite happy to put my thoughts down on paper.
